Srinagar wins bid for Skal Asia Congress to be held in April 2021, beats Bahrain

Srinagar has defeated stiff competition from Bahrain to win the bid to host the 49th Skål International Asia Area Congress to be held from  April 8 to April 11 in 2021. The congress is expected to gather together members from 44 Skal clubs from 18 Asian nations under one roof. Jammu & Kashmir’s capital city won 68% votes.

The Virtual Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Skal hosted the biding on August 28 after the 2020 Phuket edition had to be cancelled due to the ongoing COVID19 pandemic. Skal Srinagar is one of the youngest clubs of its kind in India. Ibrahim Siah, President, Skal Srinagar said that the city was extremely happy to have won the bid in spite of being just 2 years old and it is a big achievement not just for the club, but for tourism in Kashmir which has suffered since the abrogation of Section 370. The city looks forward to hosting the prestigious Skal Asia Area Congress and is hopeful that the event will provide a much-needed boost to the travel and tourism industry.

Skål is a professional organisation of tourism leaders around the world, promoting global tourism and friendship. It is the only international group uniting all branches of the travel and tourism industry. Its members, the industry’s managers and executives meet at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest. India already boasts of the maximum number of Skal clubs in Asia, a grand 18 with as many as 1400 members and now Srinagar is all set to host the Asia Area Congress.
